Learning about the Wharves' History

Working with East-the-Water Primary School, we deliver a range of fun, exciting and interactive workshops, education days, storytelling sessions and hands-on experiences that 120 Years 3 & 4 children take part in. These include:

• "Slimekiln" and seaweed slime science workshops
• Weird fish clay sculpting and painting
• Historical re-enactments of early North Devon settlers
• Salt Cod tasting and Newfoundland trade map-making

• Maritime rope-making skills
• Estuary bug and critter hunting
• Storytelling sessions about famous local people
• Supported field trips to the newly-restored SS Freshspring

Weird Wharves - Education Programme

This is the "Living History” strand of Way of the Wharves.


The fun sessions (for classes of 30) are about the cultural importance and historical relevance of Bideford’s estuary, and your school can run them too. Just download the resource packs below.
